Before living here I associated
St Georges Day with knights in shining armour and dragon slaying. In Catalunya the saint has a much bigger following to the delight of flower sellers and book shops.
Sant Jordi on 23rd April is a kind of St.Valentines day in the Spanish world with roses for the chicas and books for the chicos. In Barcelona you can barely walk through the city without falling over impromptu book stalls in the streets and getting whacked round the head with longstemmed roses. I think some of the St George dragon slaying mentality still exists, get in striking distance of a Catalan granny armed with a red rose and you'll see what I mean!
